How to clean with white vinegar & baking soda (all measurements are approximate, I just eyeball it)
- For stained plastic: On the scrubbing side of a sponge, pour 1 tablespoon of baking soda, 2 teaspoons liquid dishwashing soap, and 1 tablespoon rubbing alcohol. Scrub the stains, adding ingredients as necessary. For stained porcelain sinks, substitute cream of tartar for the baking soda.
- To keep drains running easily: Pour in 1/4 cup each baking soda and vinegar. While it is still foaming, pour in 1 gallon boiling water. For a garbage disposal, then run down hot water and run the disposal. Don't lean over the drain while you do this.
- To clean sinks or bathtubs: On the scrubbing side of a sponge, pour 2 tablespoons vinegar. Scrub, paying especial attention to soap scum, hard water stains, and mold or mildew. Rinse the sponge slightly. On the same side, pour on 1 tablespoon shampoo. Scrub again. Rinse the sink or tub. (Side note: Clean a hairbrush by washing it with shampoo.)
- To remove smells from carpet: Wet the smelly spot, if necessary. Cover in baking soda. Let dry. Vacuum up the baking soda.
- To remove hard water stains from a bathroom cup or toothbrush holder: Pour in enough vinegar to cover the stains. Let sit 5 minutes. Pour out vinegar, rinse with water.
- To clean glass: 1 tablespoon vinegar to 1 gallon water, spray on glass and wipe clean.
Disclaimers: Please use these tips with caution -- if in doubt, don't do it. Vinegar is an acid, so don't use on delicate fabrics or upholstery. Always work in a well-ventilated area. Don't use vinegar without gloves if you have any cuts on your skin.
